The house cat is a small meat eating (carnivorous) animal that has been tamed by humans. There are over 60 different kinds of cats. House cats are valued for friendship. The purr of a cat can calm and relax humans. Purring can be positive for the health of both cats and people. Over 10,000 years ago, cats were kept as pets in the Near East. Ancient Egyptians tamed cats around 4,000 years ago. The wild cats would have been attracted to the rodents living among Egyptian grain fields.
