In 1950s Australia, seventeen-year-old Yorkshireman Jimmy Brown arrives aboard the RMS Orion under the Big Brother Movement, hoping a new country will offer him a new beginning.

Instead, he finds himself on an isolated sheep station in a landscape unlike anything he has known.

As Jimmy learns to survive the Australian outback, his encounters with Aboriginal stockmen and particularly the knowledge and experience they carry begin challenging the assumptions he brought with him from Britain. At the same time, the legend of Wiberg’s Gold draws him deeper into a country whose history is far more complicated than he imagined.

Inspired by the real migration journey of author Paul Rushworth-Brown’s father, Outback Odyssey blends Australian history, adventure and human drama in a story about migration, identity, belonging, prejudice and the meaning of Country.

It is ultimately not simply a story about surviving the outback. It is about what happens when a young man is forced to reconsider what he thinks he knows about Australia, and about himself.
